Daily CTL Undercarriage Inspection Checklist

Daily CTL Undercarriage Inspection Checklist

Use this daily CTL walkaround to spot track damage, packed debris, leaks and loose hardware before work. Includes a practical defect record.

Make the walkaround safe

Park on firm, level ground, lower the attachment, stop the engine and follow the operator’s manual for securing the machine. Keep clear of moving tracks and pinch points. This is a ground-level visual inspection; lifting the machine or working under raised equipment requires the manufacturer’s support and isolation procedure.

Check both tracks systematically

Walk around each side in the same order. Look for cuts, missing tread, damaged drive lugs and material trapped between the track and frame. Compare the two sides and note fresh damage. If part of the track cannot be seen, reposition the machine only using the approved operating procedure, stop it again and then inspect. Never inspect beside a moving track.

Look at rollers, idlers and sprockets

Check visible running surfaces for unusual wear, damage or debris. Look for fresh leakage, missing hardware and loose or displaced guards. Do not reach into the undercarriage to test movement. Record a suspected seized roller or damaged sprocket for a qualified technician to investigate.

Check tension by the prescribed method

A visual impression of sag is not a substitute for the model-specific measurement. Use the manual’s conditions, measurement point and limits. If tension changes repeatedly or the track has derailed, identify the underlying fault before returning to normal work. Do not release a grease adjuster without the correct service procedure.

Make a short defect record

Record date, machine hours, side, component, photograph and action taken. Classify each observation as cleared, scheduled for inspection or machine held out of service. A defect carried forward without an owner is easy to miss. Clean the undercarriage after work so tomorrow’s inspection starts with visible components.

Frequently asked questions

Should I inspect the undercarriage every day?

Carry out the daily checks specified by your operator’s manual and inspect again after an impact, derailment or unusual operating condition.

Can I check a track while someone moves the machine?

No. Stay clear of moving tracks. Stop and secure the machine before inspecting it.

Is visible track sag enough to set tension?

No. Use the measurement procedure and limits specified for your exact model.

What should a defect report include?

Include the date, machine hours, left or right side, component, photograph and the person responsible for the next action.

What if I find leakage around a roller?

Record the location and arrange inspection. Do not assume it is harmless or continue normal work when the component’s condition is uncertain.
