How to Measure Rubber Tracks for a Compact Track Loader

Ordering the correct rubber tracks for a compact track loader starts with three key measurements: track width, pitch and number of links. These measurements help identify the correct replacement track for machines from Bobcat, CAT, Kubota, Takeuchi, John Deere, New Holland, Case, JCB and other CTL brands.

At IPX Global, rubber tracks are listed by size, machine make, model and pattern to make it easier to find the right fit for your compact track loader.

What Do Rubber Track Sizes Mean?

Most rubber track sizes are written in a format such as 450x86x55. This number gives you the three main details needed to identify the track.

  • 450 = track width in millimetres
  • 86 = pitch, which is the distance between each link
  • 55 = number of links around the track

Some tracks also include a pattern code such as AC, B, C, N or Z. This refers to the tread style and can affect traction, ride quality and ground contact.

Step 1: Measure the Rubber Track Width

The width is measured across the track from one outer edge to the other. This is usually measured in millimetres. For example, a 450mm wide rubber track will normally begin with the number 450 in the track size.

Use a tape measure across the full width of the track. If the track is badly worn, cracked or damaged, measure in more than one place to avoid getting an inaccurate reading.

Step 2: Measure the Track Pitch

The pitch is the distance between the centre of one drive lug and the centre of the next drive lug. This measurement is important because the track must match the machine’s sprocket and undercarriage system.

For many compact track loaders, common pitch sizes include 86mm, but this can vary depending on the machine and track type.

Step 3: Count the Number of Links

The link count is the total number of drive lugs around the inside of the rubber track. This is the final number in the track size.

For example, in a 450x86x55 rubber track, the track has 55 links. Counting links can take a few minutes, but it is one of the most reliable ways to confirm the correct track size.

Example Rubber Track Size

If your compact track loader uses a 450x86x55 rubber track, this means:

  • 450mm track width
  • 86mm pitch
  • 55 links

Check the Machine Make and Model

Even when the size looks correct, it is still worth checking the machine make and model. Some machines may have different track options depending on the year, undercarriage setup or original specification.

Do Rubber Track Patterns Matter?

Yes. Rubber track pattern can affect how the machine performs on mud, stone, hard ground, turf and general construction sites. Pattern options may include AC, B, C, N and Z depending on the track size and application.

If you already know your track pattern, you can browse by tread style through the Rubber Tracks by Pattern collection.

Common Rubber Track Measuring Mistakes

  • Only checking the width and ignoring the pitch
  • Miscounting the number of links
  • Assuming every model uses the same track size
  • Ordering by appearance rather than confirmed measurements
  • Not checking whether the sprockets or idlers are also worn

Check Your Undercarriage Before Replacing Tracks

Before fitting new rubber tracks, inspect the sprockets, bottom rollers, front idlers and rear idlers. Worn undercarriage parts can shorten the life of a new track and cause poor alignment, vibration or derailment.

IPX Global also supplies compact track loader parts, including sprockets, bottom rollers, front idlers and rear idlers.

Find the Right Rubber Tracks

To find the correct replacement rubber tracks, confirm the width, pitch and link count, then match the size against your machine make and model. If the track has an OEM number or visible size marking, this can also help confirm the correct replacement.
